Ismail Einashe speaks at two events, join online

On 22 October our journalist Ismail Einashe (The Guardian, BBC News) will be giving a talk at Platforma Festival about "Palermo: The Black Mediterranean – Collaborative, Investigative Methods in a Frontier Place". And on October 5 he will be speaking about trauma-aware journalism during a live webinar hosted by the Rory Peck Trust. Journalists received Training on Trauma given by psychologist Kate Porterfield

Last month we invited no other than Dr. Kate Porterfield, psychologist at the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture and founding staff member of the Journalist Trauma Support Network, an initiative at the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at Columbia University. The training discussed the biopsychosocial impact of trauma on individuals and the impact of migrant/refugee trauma that our journalists often work with.

Ali fled to Europe. Instead of security, he found death here

At least 440 migrant children, including 35 babies, have died in the past three and a half years trying to reach Europe. This is evident from data that Lost in Europe filtered from the list that United Against Refugee Deaths publishes annually on June 20, World Refugee Day.

Concerning rise in self harm amongst young migrants

Research by Lost in Europe shows that Health care workers are deeply concerned about the mental state of young asylum seekers. There is a rise in self harm incidents reported amongst this group.

Migrant children need more psychological help than we think

The number of incidents of "self-destructive behavior" among young asylum seekers over the past few years has increased alarmingly. Especially asylum children who traveled to the Netherlands unaccompanied, suffer from above-average levels of stress, trauma and suicidal thoughts. Sufficient help is lacking, say youth doctors and therapists. 'The will is there, but the resources are missing.
