Is the EU really able to protect child migrants? Research shows that more than 18,000 child migrants have gone missing since arriving in Europe between 2018-2020. This is evident from data collected by Lost in Europe in 30 European countries. With our journalists in various European countries we organised a data bootcamp to find out how many Unaccompanied Minors (UAM) are disappearing in Europe. The results of this data research were published simultaneously by our cooperating media in 9 European countries and were re-published by many news outlets worldwide.

The results of the data bootcamp by Lost in Europe are visualised as follows:

18,292 UAMs are registered as missing between 2018 and 2020. In 2020 alone, some 5,500 minors were registered as missing in 10 European countries; lack of good comparable data makes research difficult. The visualisation is made by data journalist Adriana Homolova, please follow this link for the interactive map of Europe
