Over the past 3 years, there have been at least 51,433 reports of unaccompanied minors disappearing from asylum centres in Europe. This is according to research by the journalist collective Lost in Europe which VRT NWS collaborated on together with Knack and De Standaard. These are children travelling alone through Europe, unaccompanied by a parent or guardian.

Belgium ranks third in terms of the number of disappearances. Between 2021 and 2023, a total of 2,241 unaccompanied minors disappeared in Belgium. Most of the young people disappeared from Observation and Orientation Centres, which are centres where young people are initially received.
