Unaccompanied migrant minors are increasingly suffering from drug and alcohol addictions, are severely traumatised by their migration journeys, and sometimes have a history of violence and prostitution, according to Frédéric Chapey, director of Groupe SOS Jeunesse in France. He has seen the social landscape change significantly during the 27 years he has been working in youth protection.
Groupe SOS Jeunesse is the youth protection arm of Groupe SOS, one of France’s largest non-profit organisations. The organisation runs shelter and support programmes for vulnerable children and young people, including unaccompanied migrant minors. Frédéric Chapey has been with the organisation for eleven years and has now been director of the youth care department (Aide Sociale à l’Enfance) across France and its overseas territories for five years.
